„Dar dacă nu faci vânătoare cu ei? La ce îl poți utiliza? Îl ai ca și companion, de exemplu, la o curte sau la un bloc. Te-am văzut cu bicicleta cu ei.
Da, așa este. Ei se potrivesc foarte bine familiilor active. Așadar cei care intenționează să achiziționeze o Vizsla trebuie să se gândească și să își analizeze propriul stil de viață. Se pot integra foarte ușor în activitățile de familie. Așadar, celor cărora le place ciclismul, celor cărora le plac drumețiile la munte, înotul la mare, trebuie să știe că Vizsla este extraordinară pentru asta. Inclusiv cu placa pe lac. De asemenea, sunt Vizsla care fac agility, sporturi canine, cu mare succes. În România nu am văzut, dar în străinătate am văzut Vizsla folosite la agility cu mare succes. Dacă îți place să alergi… de altfel, una dintre cupe este, de exemplu, câștigată la Canicross-ul care a avut loc în Băneasa, în pădurea Băneasa, când am alergat 11 km cu cățelul. Sunt multe activități care pot fi făcute cu ei și asta îi face atât de deosebiți și de speciali până la urmă și de îndrăgiți în România, din ce în ce mai mult. Și asta ne bucură.
Deci nu neapărat de vânătoare. Zice cineva: mie nu place vânătoarea, nu sunt adeptul vânătorii.
Nu neapărat vânătoare.
Poți să-ți iei un cățel de companie și să faci liniștit toate astea: să te plimbi, să pleci cu el, să alergi cu el…El este cu tine, îi place.
Sigur, sigur. Noi am fost și la pescuit.
Ați fost și la pescuit!
Am fost și în Delta Dunării, cu barca. Am fost peste tot, până la urmă. E un câine pe care îl poți lua în vacanță.
De câtă mișcare are nevoie?
Dacă ar fi să luăm exemplul nostru, noi îi scoatem dimineața și seara obligatoriu. Apoi depinde de fiecare, în funcție de cât timp are la dispoziție. Dar să zicem aproximativ o oră dimineața, o oră seara, însă e important și ce se întâmplă în această oră.
Ideal vorbind, ar fi bine să poată să facă mișcare, nu să fie ținut în lesă la picior timp de o oră, căci nu-și consumă energia suficient. Mai este însă o metodă, și asta le recomandăm mereu și proprietarilor care achiziționează de la noi: stimularea mentală.
Adică?
15 minute de stimulare mentală echivalează cu o jumătate de oră de efort fizic. Stimulare mentală înseamnă diverse jocuri. Să ascundem, de exemplu, niște treat-uri prin casă și dăm câinelui comanda să găsească treat-urile respective.
Sau o jucărie, dacă nu este un treat. Noi jucam cu ei alba-neagra cu paharele și ascundeam treat sub un pahar iar câinele trebuia să identifice cu năsucul să-mi spună practic sub ce pahar este treat-ul pentru a-l primi. Dresajul de obediență, la fel, stimulează foarte mult mental și obosește foarte mult câinele.
Așadar, cei care nu au atât de mult timp la dispoziție pe parcursul unei zile lucrătoare să iasă afară, pot utiliza aceste modalități de a fi stimulare mentală.
Celor care își iau câine, tu ce le spui? Trebuie să ai timp să îl scoți. Eu n-am timp, dar vreau câine. Atunci ia-ți smartphone sau hamster, așa-i?
Da….”

“But what if someone doesn’t hunt with a Vizsla? What can you use them for? Can they have them as pets, for example, in a yard or inside an apartment? I saw you took the dogs with you on a bike ride…
Yes, we did a lot of bike ridings with them. They are happiest with an active family. Therefore, those who intend to purchase a Vizsla must first do some introspection and examine their own lifestyle. A Vizsla is adaptable, they can easily fit into the activities of a sporty family. Those who like cycling, hiking, swimming must know that a Vizsla is great for that. Including paddleboarding. They also make good agility dogs, they excel at various canine sports such as agility. I’m not aware of any Vizsla in Romania doing agility but I know for a fact that, abroad, there are Vizslas competing with great success in agility events. Or maybe someone likes to run… by the way, this cup, for example, was won at the Canicross race that took place in Băneasa, in the Băneasa forest. I ran 11 km with my dog, and we made it to the podium, we came second.
They are incredibly versatile dogs, suitable for a variety of activities, and that’s what makes them so special and loved in Romania, more and more. And that makes us very happy.
So not necessarily hunting. Maybe someone says: I don’t like hunting, I’m not a fan of hunting.
Not necessarily hunting.
Vizsla can join you when walking, running etc… As long as they are with you, they will be happy.
Exactly right! By the way, we also went fishing.
You also went fishing!
We took with the dog to the Danube Delta, we went by boat. I’ve taken the dog everywhere, basically. Vizsla is a dog you can go with on vacation.
How much exercise does a Vizsla need?
What we do, we take them out twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. Then… it’s up to everyone, depending on how much time they have available. But let’s say about an hour in the morning, an hour in the evening, keeping in mind that what happens during this time is also important: ideally, they should be able to burn off energy, not be kept on a “heel” command for an hour, as it won’t tire them out. But there is another way, too… one that we strongly recommend to all owners who buy puppies from us: mental stimulation.
You mean?
15 minutes of mental training is equivalent to half an hour of physical exercise. Mental stimulation means playing various games with the dogs to challenge their minds. For example, hiding treats around the house that they will then need to find. Or hiding a toy, if not a treat.
Another fun game that we also play with our dogs is the following one: we take three cups, we put a treat under one cup and the dog must sniff at the cup with the treat under it in order to receive praise and get the reward.
Obedience training, likewise, is very mentally stimulating and exhausting for a dog.
So those who don’t have that much time in a working day to go out with their dog, they can also do mental stimulation activities and tire them off.
To those who want to get a dog, what do you say to them? “You must have plenty of time to go out with the dog.” Someone could say: “I don’t have time, but I still want a dog”. So they should probably get a smartphone or a hamster, right?

„Dar cum ai trecut de la posesor la crescător?
Au fost necesari șapte ani de zile pentru a face acest pas.
Pentru curaj?
Și pentru curaj, dar și pentru a putea deprinde, a putea învăța, da. Ne-am dorit mult să studiem foarte bine rasa…
A durat 7 ani până când ți-ai convins soțul?
El n-a fost atât de greu de convins până la urmă.
Tot din dragoste pentru această rasă, de altfel, el de acum 2 ani a devenit vânător cu, sigur, acte în regulă. Ne-am dorit foarte mult și ne-am propus să facem lucrurile ca la carte, în măsura în care este posibil. Și atunci, fiind niște câini de vânătoare, din punctul nostru de vedere, a fost foarte important să le oferim această oportunitate de a vâna.
Dar dresajul e diferit la vânătoare față de dresajul de ring?
Da, e diferit. Dresajul de ring presupune etalarea cățelului, punerea lui într-o poziție statică pentru a putea fi examinat de către arbitru iar apoi arbitrul evaluează cățelul și în dinamică, în mișcare.
Sunt niște ture care se dau în jurul ringului, se face ceea ce se cheamă up-and-down, înainte și înapoi, și așa mai departe.
Dresajul de vânătoare însă, sigur că implică și multe altele, pe lângă anumite calități native pe care ar trebui să le aibă ca să se poată lucra cu un câine la vânătoare.
Dar la vânătoare nu faceți și dresaj de aret?
Ba da.
Adică vede vânatul și îngheață.
Da. Ei, ca și câini de vânătoare, trebuie să fie câini compleți.
În sensul în care ei caută, fac ceea ce înseamnă chetă. Așadar, caută vânatul, apoi când îl găsesc fac aretul, blochează practic vânatul. Apoi, așteaptă să vină vânătorul, dacă vânătorul e la o distanță apreciabilă, și în momentul în care vânătorul s-a apropiat și dă comanda, vânatul zboară, pasărea în cazul nostru zboară, se împușcă și mai apoi rolul cățelului este de a face retrieval.
Deci este și retriever și pointer.
Exact. Trebuie să poată lucra în orice condiții de teren, adică atât în câmp, cât și la baltă.
Trebuie să aibă dragoste de apă și să poată să facă acest retrieve.
Au dragoste de apă?
Da, au dragoste de apă. Avem noroc din punctul acesta de vedere: toți puii din cuibul nostru au foarte mare dragoste de apă și de altfel, în perioada aceasta caniculară e cam singura metodă de a-i răcori puțin și ne ajută în același timp pe partea de antrenamente.
Dar să le spunem telespectatorilor care se uită acum că vânătoarea se face în condiții legale, în anumite perioade, totul legal.
Așa este, da. Faci parte dintr-o asociație de vânătoare, plătești o cotizație anuală, pentru fiecare partidă de vânătoare se obține autorizație specifică în care se notează în clar câte exemplare, câte piese ai voie să împuști. Nimeni nu împușcă haotic.
Să nu se transforme în braconaj.
Nu, nu, nici vorbă, nici vorbă, nici vorbă. Nu există această variantă, cel puțin atunci când ești vânător pasionat și responsabil. Iar legat de perioadele anului, cel puțin în cazul de față, al câinilor prepelicari, cum li se spune, avem o pauză undeva la șase luni într-un an de zile.
La fazan ieșiți?
Ieșim la fazan. Ei au vânat și fazan, și prepeliță, și potârniche, chiar și rațe, la baltă.

And how did you become a dog breeder?
It took us seven years to get into breeding.
And to find courage?
Yes, but we also took the time to learn. We really wanted to research the breed very well…
Or did it take you 7 years to maybe convince your husband?
No… He wasn’t that hard to convince after all. Actually, out of love for this breed, he even became a licensed hunter 2 years ago. Our chief preoccupation and what we all cared about was to do things by the book, as much as possible. With this in mind, and since Vizsla is a hunting breed, it became very important for us to be able to provide our dogs with the opportunity to hunt.
But is hunting training different from the dog show training?
Yes, it’s different. Dog show training involves presenting a dog to an experienced judge for evaluation. The judge will examine the dog in a stand-still position, but also in movement (gaiting), meaning that the dog will move around the ring or up-and-down, usually on the diagonal.
Hunting training, however, certainly involves a lot more. And I mean in addition to dog’s strong natural instincts which are a must for any good hunting dog.
But don’t you also train them to hold point?
Sure.
I mean, when they see the game and freeze.
Yes. Vizslas, as a hunting breed, are all-round dogs. In the sense that they search for the game, locate it and when successful in finding the game, they point it and hold the point until the hunter gets close and gives them the command to flush. This means that the bird, in our case, flies, the hunter shoots it and once the game is shot, the dogs then retrieve it.
So, Vizsla is both a retriever and a pointer.
Exactly. Also, a Vizsla must be able to work in all environments, that is, both in the field and water. Must have a love of water and be able to retrieve from water.
Do your dogs love water?
Yes, they love water. Luckily, all our puppies from this litter are enthusiastic about water, and besides, during this hot season it’s about the only way to cool them off a bit and at the same time it helps us with training.
But let’s tell our viewers that hunting is carried out under strict conditions, during certain periods, and in compliance with the legal requirements.
That’s right, yes. As a hunter, you are a member of a hunting association/ society, you pay an annual fee, and for each hunting a specific licence is issued, clearly stating the number and type of species allowed to be hunted. No one is hunting randomly.
Not to turn this into poaching.
No, not. There is no such option, at least if we’re talking about a passionate and responsible hunter. And hunting is only allowed during a declared hunting open season for the prescribed species. For instance, in our case, the hunting season is closed right now, and generally speaking, we only have about 6 months per year to hunt with Vizslas.
Are you going out to pheasant hunting?
We do pheasant hunting. Also quail, and partridge, even duck hunting.”

„Cum stau cu mirosul? Au un simț olfactiv extraordinar de bine dezvoltat. Asta îi face foarte potriviți pentru o sumedenie de activități, de exemplu vânătoarea la trufe, despre care se vorbește destul de puțin.
De asemenea, există un câine celebru, Feco se numește, care a fost activ în cadrul Pazei de Costă din San Francisco timp de 8 ani de zile, poate și mai bine, și care fusese antrenat să detecteze explozibili. Și în toată perioada respectivă a lucrat alături de paza de coastă din San Francisco, detectând explozibili și participând la sute și sute de misiuni. Sunt chiar înregistrări pe YouTube foarte amuzante, cu Feco care urcă în elicopter, coboară din elicopter. O Vizsla extraordinar de bine antrenată, echilibrată, stăpână pe sine. Deci simțul acesta olfactiv îi ajută să întreprindă o grămadă de activități.

”How about their sense of smell? They have an extraordinarily well-developed sense of smell. This makes them very suitable for a lot of activities, for example truffle hunting, which is not much talked about.
Also, there is a famous Vizsla dog named Feco who was active with the San Francisco Coast Guard for 8 years, if not more, and his main responsibility was explosives detection. And throughout that entire time, he worked alongside the U.S. Coast Guard, detecting explosives and participating in hundreds and hundreds of missions. There are even very funny YouTube videos of Feco conduct vertical delivery and hoisting exercise abord a helicopter. A beautiful example of a perfectly well-trained, well-balanced and calm Vizsla dog.
Thus, their excellent nose makes them suitable for many activities. I gave the example of explosives, but there are many others, such as drug detection and so on. A Vizsla could brilliantly carry out such missions. And this is less known about Vizslas, because there are other dog breeds usually used for this. ”

„Ce înseamnă Vizsla?
Vizsla înseamnă brac în limba maghiară. Este o rasă originară din Ungaria și, istoric vorbind, a fost o rasă deținută de nobilimea maghiară. Pătura săracă a societății nu avea dreptul să dețină și să crească brac maghiar. Ei au fost utilizați pentru vânătoare. Se pare că apar niște picturi rupestre în urmă cu mai bine de o mie de ani, din care rezulta că vânătorul maghiar vâna cu asemenea cățel, care avea apariția unei Vizsla. Dar mai apoi, atestările scrise sunt din secolul al XIV-lea. Ulterior, importanța pentru vânătoare crește din ce în ce mai mult, deja în secolele XVIII-XIX se vânează intensiv cu ei. Sunt folosiți ca prepelicari, cum li se mai și spune, așadar pentru vânat mic, cu pene, dar ocazional și cu blană, de exemplu pot vâna iepure cu succes.
Sunt comoara națională a Ungariei și se spune chiar că nu puteau fi înstrăinați de pe teritoriu decât dacă constituiau un cadou, „Gift of Kings”, un cadou pentru regii perioadei. Inclusiv regina Spaniei se pare că a deținut la un moment dat Vizsla.
Deci erau foarte greu de înstrăinat, foarte atașați de stăpânii lor, de nobili, au trăit pe domeniu și au fost foarte bine îngrijiți de-a lungul timpului de către stăpâni. Iată că toate aceste trăsături frumoase s-au transmis mai departe.”

”What does “Vizsla” mean?
Vizsla is a pointing dog, a breed originating from Hungary and, historically speaking, it was a breed owned by the Hungarian nobility. The lower, poorer classes of society did not have the right to own and breed a Hungarian pointing dog. They were used for hunting, and there are some cave paintings dating from more than a thousand years ago depicting a Magyar tribesman hunting with a dog which had the resemblance of a Vizsla.
But the written attestations are from the 14th century. Later, the breed gained more and more popularity, already in the 18th – 19th centuries they were intensively used for hunting. They are bird dogs, suitable mainly for small game with feathers, but occasionally also with fur, for example they can be used successfully in rabbit hunting.
The breed is officially recognised as the national treasure of Hungary, and it is even said that the only Vizslas allowed out of Hungary were given as royal gifts, and this is why they came to be known as the “Gift of Kings”, basically a gift to the kings of the period. Even the Queen of Spain presumably owned a Vizsla at one point.
Vizslas were genuinely attached to their masters – to the nobility of that time -, they lived on the nobles’ estates and were very well nurtured and cared for. All these beautiful traits have been passed on until the present time.”
